The old town Margate. The fact that it is defined as a different area to the rest of Margate is quite revealing.
Margates high street has not been synonymous with anything other than bad news headlines for as long as most will remember. But a high street it was, and that meant that opportunity for small businesses were unviable due to the rents.
The bit that had long been downtrodden was the old bit. Scruffy, boarded up, the bit where no one really wanted to go or be. This was the old town.
But when you looked beyond the grime, pulled back the boarded windows and doors it was actually a authentic, architecturally beautiful area.
This is where many had sought to dip their toe into the independent retailer abyss, and had been swallowed up countless times before, but this old town wasn't dead, it needed a heart massage.
Old town Margate is revived and very much the new town Margate.
This is where everyone wants to be, and we are all grateful for it.
This is where we find BOTTEGA CARUSO.
An engaging place which encapsulates everything good about Margate. It is an expression of passion, desire and belief.
The food is proudly bold
Sophisticated in its authenticity
Delightfully memorable, and this is so important. If you are just another pizzeria then you will be lost amongst all the others.
Set in the most homely of spaces. It feels authentic, as it should be.
It diversifies brilliantly by selling it's outstanding ingredients and sauces.
And all brought to life with its passionate team.
What I admire is the tenacity of their business acumen. Not just content with creating wonderful food, they will sell you the homemade ingredients. Not just content with selling you the products of their labour, they are also a cookery school where you can learn the skills to create the foods which have already pleased you on your plate. The team here are the true stars.
