SARGASSO, MARGATE. Bib Gourmand Michelin awarded.

MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking

The seaside outpost of London restaurant Brawn, Sargasso sits beside the harbour wall and comes with some great views. The ethos and the menu are similar: an almost daily-changing selection of 12-15 well-priced, wide-ranging seasonal dishes. Fish from the small local boats is a highlight.

A day trip to Margate isn't complete without a walk up the harbour arm to get a sense of connection, the sound of the gulls, the crisp air, the smell of the sea and of course, the stunning views.

Now there is more to discover. There are smells of great food, sounds of chat and laughter, the sight of colourful people. Dubbed Shoreditch on Sea, the harbour arm is vibrant with life.

It has had quite the transformation in only a few years. The stone pier was very much a working harbour, and to a point it still is with small fishing boats and pleasure craft that stick upright in the mud at low tide. Along the pier were fisherman's storage units, they were functional and hardy, certainly no place for a Restaurant.

Oh if only you could turn the clock back about 10 years, and buy them all...the local council practically gave them away (allegedly).

Now it is a gloriously diverse blend of bars, eateries and art galleries, and the feature of this article, SARGASSO.

It is the first door you come to as you walk along the pier.

Understated and unassuming. You would be forgiven for walking straight past it.

The other places along the pier have signs like Gallery, Real ale, Burritos, Toilets, Lighthouse bar. Oh yeah the toilets... Thankfully now out of service, but Sargasso has now invested in some much needed personal use toilets.

Fortunately for SARGASSO the Michelin inspectors do not judge the toilet situation.

It's all about the plate.

The interior space of SARGASSO is completely open to the kitchen which blends seamlessly into the bar. That's cool.

It is a functional, professional, almost industrial vibe. Seats that face the bar give it a YO! Sushi kind of I'm eating at a counter experience.

Outside is welcome space for some tables which bask in the glorious Margate sunshine.

The inside seats provide a perfect spot to see the world walk by

The menu changes daily, this isn't a place to return for the same dish you left Margate and told your friends about. The point is the next time you visit you get a whole new reason to tell your friends about SARGASSO.

Inspired seasonal dishes.

What are Bib Gourmands?
Bib Gourmands, which translates literally as 'Gourmet Bibs', are awards given to restaurants that offer what Michelin deems to be good quality and good value cooking - i.e. good value for money.

Simply put, SARGASSO creates supreme plates of food for reasonable money, and for that reason they are worthy recipients of the accolade.

SARGASSO isn't born from Margate, but Margate is reborn with the likes of SARGASSO.
