STARK, BROADSTAIRS. THANETS MICHELIN STAR RESTAURANT

MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

One MICHELIN Star: High quality cooking, worth a stop!

Patience – and flexibility on dates – are needed when attempting to secure a table at Stark because the restaurant has just four of them. Yes, this is one of the smallest Starred restaurants around and thus one of the most challenging to get into.
Chef Ben Crittenden works alone in the open kitchen and offers a no-choice six course menu that should appeal to everyone. His dishes may appear quite delicate in their looks but they offer plenty of flavour and contrasts in texture, whether that’s salmon with kohlrabi or cod with almonds. The ingredients are also clearly sourced with care – like delicious Shh’annu lamb from Lockerbie.
Your best bet is to go with the wine pairings so you’re free from any decision making on the night.

STARK. A strikingly brash name, strong and purposeful. A clear, one-syllable word that is stripped back and simplistic.

What is a name anyway? You do not go to a restaurant to eat a name, but if I could... I would choose to eat Stark!

Broadstairs is the place to go for good food. Within half a mile there are more restaurants than I care to count. Some have been established for over 30 years, while others appear and then disappear as quickly as we seem to have Prime Ministers.

To penetrate that market, you would think you have to be in the mix? Not STARK.

STARK opened in 2016 in a tiny space, barely a kiosk sized restaurant in back street Broadstairs. In fact if you didn't know where it was, it would have been easy to miss.

They had to make STARK unforgettable.

How can you make a tiny, irrelevant space a Michelin star restaurant?

I am sure a Michelin star was incomprehensible at the start, but nothing gets people talking around here more than food.

Once the secret was out it became almost impossible to get a reservation.

Now moved a couple of doors up into larger premises they can spread their wings, but not too big to lose its identity.

A Secret. There is an element to their business that remains a secret, it is the menu which you discover on arrival.

Only offering a secret 6 course meal for a fixed price, and a wine pairing for each course for an additional cost, STARK has redifined the meaning of fine dining in Broadstairs.

Once you are in, there is no turning back.

And nor would you want to, this promises to be one of the most incredible gastronomic experiences of your life.
