ANGELAS, MARGATE. Green Michelin award for gastronomy and sustainability.

MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

A friendly team run this understated little bistro set just off the esplanade. Their ethos is fiercely local and sustainable and even the tables are made of compressed recycled plastic. The concise blackboard menu lists sustainable fish and a vegetarian option – no meat – and cooking is pleasingly unfussy.

Gastronomy & Sustainability

MICHELIN Green Star

"First and foremost, we always consider our people and our planet, working directly with growers, fishermen and suppliers who minimise their environmental impact. We don't use meat because it contributes too much carbon, and our supply chain is plastic free."

— Rob Cooper

I like that they never changed the name.

What is a name anyway, you can't eat or drink it.

Angelas was a little greasy spoon, quiet and unassuming. A place to nip in for a mug of tea or a bacon sarnie. The kind of place which were owned by people who fancied a little hobby,  a last horrah before you kicked the bucket.

I think it is because it was so unassuming that it was surprising that it became a restaurant, called Angelas.
You might expect a dramatic transformation to throw off its previous image, but no, the changes were visually subtle.

The change was what was on your plate.

It is with this stealthy attitude which allowed it to slip into the conversation of people who love exceptional food, and this is how it goes if you are in those circles.

They doubled down on their identity, which is a strict ethical stance which flows through the whole concept. If you love good food, you want to go, if you love amazing ethical food then Angelas is your heroin.
Eye catching small dishes draw you in from the street.

Stunning plates priced sensibly. This is a Michelin listed restaurant, and a main dish is less than £20. They haven't priced their menu to be competitive, it is priced to reflect the ingredients and expertise to take those elements to the next level, sustainably. No extra added for the dreaded "je ne sais qois." no, this is so not their style.

Their style is unfussy and stripped back, just like the dining room. It does none of the talking, the food does all the shouting.
