I like smudging my nose into other peoples business, so I write reviews on pubs and restaurants mainly but tourist attractions too. I had imagined myself as some kind of clairvoyant making predictions on success or failure, commenting on the psyche of the business model, but to be fair i'm just over opinionated. Ramsgate welcomes a new and exciting restaurant where the old "Travellers in Italy" restaurant was but more popularly remembered as Pizza Express which enjoyed a regal position on Ramsgates Royal Harbour marina within this gorgeous building. Welcome then to Chuck and Blade who have emerged onto the hospitality stage like The Prodigy on cocaine. I admit I had never heard of them and that is forgivable given they only started as a pop up in 2020, but now they have 4 sites in Kent and appear to be on the charge! I love a success story, especially when it is against all the odds, don't they know there's a war on? Yes the cost of living weighs heavily on most hospitality businesses but like I've written before, if you are attractive then you can not only survive, but you can thrive. They haven't even opened yet so forgive my forthcoming ramble for it is nothing more than my initial thoughts without actually eating the food or smelling the...

DUKES, MARGATE. Finally open. The definition of Bohemian.

I first wrote this review back in January when I assumed that it was opening, and it would appear I was wrong so it would only be right to put the record straight. It is now August and for reasons unknown to myself it has only just announced its official opening! So clearly things must have changed, so to play fair I have edited the review to remove any references which may not relate to now.. phew, now I have excised myself of blame or guilt, let's go! I sit here (in January) taking stock of my first visit to DUKES, in old town Margate. Weirdly I have to start from a slightly strange position. It has nothing to do with DUKES as it is today by the way, just go with it. Have you seen the Netflix series called The Watcher ? It is an entertaining "who done it" thriller based around a mysterious group of people called "The Watchers" who held a fascination for an old house. THE HORSE AND GROOM, RAMSGATE. Is it Ramsgates hidden gem or missing its shovel?

Wind back the clock a couple of hundred years when the roads of Ramsgate town were narrow and few, and the town had a rabbit warren of interconnecting passageways. I imagine it like a scene from a Dickens novel, dark, sooty, smokey, and the candle lights of the local pub flickering. Behind the gorgeous Georgian and Victorian facade of Ramsgates sea front is the remnants of some pretty cool old buildings. But you have to look for them. There is such incredible history in Ramsgate, it would have been a magnificent town in the 1800's. Affluent, Artistic, Royal. Harbour Street, is a narrow road lined with shops leading from the harbour to the High Street.. Harbour Street in recent years has been hit hard with the closure of independent businesses, now its well and truly on the up and its become a bit of a foodie hot spot! As you head towards the town you might come across a side alley called Thomson passage... ...
